UD Food Pantry Awareness

The purpose of this project is to have the UD community become more aware of an essential resource on campus.

Food Pantry Awareness | A Look Inside

The food pantry is run by Theological Seminary students on campus. Although it is named after their department, all are welcomed to stop by and grab as many supplies as they need. Their hours are Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:00 AM and Thursday from 4:30 to 5:00 PM. They are aware that those times may not fit certain schedules, so they are willing to make arrangements. This is an amazing, on campus resource for anyone in need of food if they're running low. Make sure to stop by today!

Food Pantry Awareness | Initiating the Project

First, we decided to reach out to the freshman audience. It is required to have a meal plan for your first-year of college, which is tricky on expenses considering how expensive it is and how easily it can run out. We contacted Lindsay Ward, Director of First Year Experience and spoke with her about reaching out to students about this resource. We spoke with the huge group of all World View courses and met with individual groups as well. Some professors even welcomed us into other courses. Then, we wanted to reach out to all faculty and staff members on campus to spread the word to their students. Wth help from Mary Beth Theis in the Advancement Office, we were able to send out a notice that notified them of the pantry, the location, the hours, and what they will provide. There were plenty of positive responses about spreading the word. We also asked for a small donation and have raised $10 so far!

Food Pantry Awanress | What's Next?

A member from the Green Team has made awesome posters promoting the pantry! We will be posting these around campus and also reach out to the Spartan Scoop about putting it in their newsletter. This will be implemented around J-Term. There's also a hopeful collaboration with TRIO, a student service that's dedicated to helping students succeed through scholarships, workshops, and academic advising. With the help of TRIO, we will organize a movie night where we will watch "Thought for Food," a documentary focused on how students from all around the world are fighting against food insecurity. We will also host a money management workshop where we will focus on balancing expenses and making budget friendly meals! The food pantry is also thinking about expanding by adding hygenic products and even donated clothing. The Green Team's Dump & Donate project is perfect access to this, grabbing any unwanted items and donating it to our own community.

We will also be entering another approval period where we will be talking to Jason Crane, UD's web editor, about adding the food pantry to a resources section. We also need to communicate with Kristi Lynch, Director of Public Information, about releasing a press statement about our project.
