My Vocation Is... To Help!

Based on this project, I believe that my vocation is being a part of a good cause that will help others. By using the skills I’ve learned as a Communication major, I implemented my project with a primary goal of letting people know about a resource that can benefit them. I realized that I wanted to help others because I felt good about the work I was doing and it drove my passion to work harder. When I reflect on the first assignment in class, “What Brought Me / Got Me Here,” I talked about how change helped me get to Dubuque. I wanted to change everything for the better – my environment, my major, and anything else that was standing in the way of my success. I think that connects to where I am now and how I still want to change not only for myself but also for the benefit of others. When I found out about the pantry, I was surprised that it wasn’t being used to its advantages. The same reaction had been the same with others as they weren’t aware that a resource like that even existed. That is what I wanted to change. I wanted to change the fact that no one knew about this amazing resource! I wanted to help students become more aware of what’s available to them if circumstances ever come down to them needing it. This project helped me realize that I want to work hard to contribute to my community. If I set a goal, I want it to be achieved to the best of my ability – not only for my own accomplishment but to know that what I achieved managed to help someone in need.

As a final answer to my vocation reflection, I never expected it to be “to help people.” If I were to answer honestly, I would say that I still wasn’t sure yet. What’s my true passion in life? No idea but I’ll figure it out! Sadly, I knew that answer wasn’t going to cut it, so I went with the first answer that came to mind. When I considered “to help others” as my vocation, I thought it was a cliché. Everyone at some point in their lives think that their purpose in life is to contribute to society in some helpful way. We always think as kids that we’re going to be the next president or the next doctor that cures a disease. We always have the desire to change something about the world. I realized that the same desire got me to where I am today and it also helped me decide what my passion is. I want to keep changing and I want to contribute something to society. In order to do so, I want to use the skills that I have acquired during college to help. Vocation is all about doing what you love and if I love the idea of using what I have learned to help others then that is everything to me.
